What Is the Indiana Homestead Exemption?


The Indiana Homestead Exemption Deduction gives homeowners a property-tax reduction on their primary residence. It applies only to the home you live in as your principal place of residence.


You qualify if:

  • You purchased a home in Indiana this year, and

  • It’s your primary residence (not a secondary home, rental, or investment property)


Deadline to file: December 31 of the year you purchased the home


Missing the deadline means you won’t receive the tax benefit for the upcoming year.


How to File

You can file:

  • Online (in many counties)

  • In person at your County Auditor’s Office

  • By submitting the county’s Homestead Deduction form

You’ll typically need:

  • Your property address

  • Parcel number (found on your closing docs or county website)

  • Proof of residency

  • Your closing disclosure
